Comics and animation writer Dwayne McDuffie died Monday of unknown causes. The Detroit native wrote comics for DC and Marvel, and penned TV and movie projects such as All Star Superman, Justice League and Ben 10: Alien Force.

McDuffie won a Humanitas Prize in 2003 for an episode of his TV series Static Shock in which superhero Static discovers that his superpowers could not protect those close to him from gun violence.

McDuffie, along with a coalition of African-American writers and artists,  co-founded Milestone Media in 1993. The company was created in part to give better representation to minorities in comics.

McDuffie was 49.
