Smallville News Roundup

November 3, 2008

Our first Smallville news round up for November and we have some cool stuff to share!

BREAKING NEWS from around the web

Former Smallville executive producer and Superman comic writer extraordinaire Jeph Loeb and his co-exec producer and writer Jesse Alexander were let go from Heroes this week.

Heroes ratings have plummeted this fall with their dark and disjointed storytelling much as Smallville’s did from mid-season 6- end of season 7. I do appreciate that NBC is not calling this a parting of the ways or any such nicey niceness- they were fired. Warner Brothers was nicer to Millar and Gough but the bottom line is if your are telling a story about Heroes you have to have hope. Somebody needs to launch and Operations Save Heroes From Itself- sorry but at OSCK we are just too freaking happy with season 8 to bother with Heroes fate.

Smallville: Enter the Legion of Super Heroes

IGN Spoke to Geoff Johns and got some serious scoop on the episode we are all waiting for! Legion.

Here is an excerpt from the interview- read the rest by clicking the link above:

“Asked about that episode, Johns said, “I’m actually in Vancouver all week for the filming. Wait until you see it. So far it’s been amazing to be involved with the writers in Los Angeles, particularly Darren Swimmer. And the cast and crew have been awesome – Tom [Welling], Allison [Mack] and Kristin [Kreuk] are in my episode and they are freaking amazing. Tom came up with a fantastic addition to the Legion Code, he impresses the hell out of me. He keeps the energy up on the set, keeps things fun, and he’s unbelievably smart. He approaches everything with incredible intelligence.”

Elaborating on the Smallville actors, Johns said, “Allison is not only an amazing actress, and she had to do some pretty intense things in this episode, she’s the nicest person ever. She’s also incredibly respectful of the fan base of the show and how far reaching it is. Every line she delivers makes you smile. Kristen is an unbelievable actress too. She delivered such a powerful scene Tuesday, it was more heartfelt than anything I could ever deliver on a page. She made the scene come to life. And, like Tom and Allison, [she's] super nice.”

Johns went on to add, “I love who they have playing the Legion. They look great. I’ll talk more about them when they’re announced. But they freaking rock. Legion rings, the villain’s weapon — holy s**t, wait until you see HIM– “Grife!”, they are the Legion.”"

From Ausiello on EW Last Week:
Question: What’s happening? I used to jump on here and be overloaded with Smallville spoilers, but last week… nothing! Do you have anything that can satiate this Smallville fanatic? — Susie
Ausiello: “Satiate”? Probably not. But “tantalize”? You betcha. My moles whisper that there’s an action-packed story arc in the works for Lana.

Not looking forward to Lana’s return? Read this interesting essay I found in the Pittsburgh Gazzette archives from 2007.

We at Operation Save Clark Kent try to stay positive- but how many people really care about Lana anymore in light of all of the delicious Superman action we have had so far this season?

Our friends at the TVAddict have a much cooler post to share- Daniel got an exclusive interview with Cassidy Freeman and got her to spill about being the new villain on Smallville.

Gaby our good friend at the Devoted Network got a big CLOIS question answered by Matt last week on TVG:

Kiss or no kiss, “Committed” was one of the best Smallville episodes ever. Can you keep us in this high with some Clark-Lois scoop? – Gaby
Matt: But what if “Clark-Lois scoop” and “keep us in this high” are mutually exclusive in this instance? Over the next few weeks, I am told, Clark and Lois’ newfound closeness will be tested when Ms. Lane goes on a date with “a handsome ‘Daily Planet’ reporter.” (My man in Vancouver refused to divulge said newsman’s name; I choose to dub him Lucky Bastid.) A bit further down the road, Clois will find themselves as travel partners on a long and very strange trip. The out-of-this-world sitch will pull them closer and closer until, on the day of Chloe’s wedding, a familiar face comes between them — just as sparks start to fly. Gee, who could that be?

Also on TVG there wasn’t much Smallville news but people are debating the new Robin backstory Pilot The Graysons:

Question: I recently heard the news about the CW wanting to do a show about a pre-Robin Dick Grayson as an acrobat in his parents’ circus. As a comic book geek, at first I was really excited about this. Then I thought about what kind of story they could tell, and I realized that this really is a terrible idea. If the CW wants a companion/replacement show for Smallville, why this? They passed on an excellent Aquaman pilot (which was the #1 sold TV show episode on iTunes for a while, I might add) and fans have wanted a Green Arrow show with Justin Hartley which has great potential. So why are they choosing this? Considering the best part of Dick Grayson’s life is actually after he goes by Robin and becomes Nightwing, I really need to (yet again) question the CW’s intentions. Are they trying to drive the network to extinction? They got rid of WWE Smackdown, which won the ratings every Friday night in their target demo, and now this? Isn’t it bad enough that they have every other show with teenage angst, but now they want a show about Dick’s life in the circus? I like to think I’m optimistic, and maybe after seeing the pilot I’d change my mind, but tell me that this doesn’t raise some serious eyebrows. Maybe they’ll finally realize they’re literally sitting on a gold-mine idea with a Green Arrow show. — Joel

Matt Roush: With all due respect to self-confessed comic-book geeks who have a vested interest in seeing their favorite heroes immortalized in a show of their own — and I have absolutely no opinion on the relative merits of Aquaman or Green Arrow — let’s just see if or how this one turns out before passing judgment. I’ll admit I’m a bit skeptical of this premise, not ever having been particularly fascinated in Robin’s origin or myth before he teamed with Batman. But then, I was more into Smallville back before it became Metropolis or whatever it is now, so I’m not disinclined to watch a revisionist action series about the making of a young superhero. I can’t blame the CW for wanting to relive past glory by trying a new version of Smallville with another origin story, but it does sound a bit of a stretch.

I am really hoping the CW sees the potential in a charactor driven JLA series
keep clark out add orical type.
I agree Arrow has great potential but Impulse Cyborg Auqman and of course Black Canery would be great suport.
The Grayson series seems odd. I can’t even imagine myself tuning in for a single episode. Grayson’s parents died when he was young and he was pretty much nothing before that moment.
and as you have said he really didnt come into his own until Nightwing
