Smallville News and Spoilers Update

September 10, 2008

Update by Kate Blake, admin OSCK

For tons of Smallville spoilers including script snippets and more- head over to SpoilerTV, OSCK provides our trailers to STV and we love to discuss their spoiler news in our forums.

Here is our round up for the week so far:

Word has come out that production on Smallville will be stopping when episode 10 is done. That will be the end of the first half of the season, with the back half to pick up with episode 11 and run all spring. Reaper will be moving into the Smallville time slot during the winter to be paired with Supernatural to try to pair them together in case Smallville is indeed done with season 8. My feeling is that this is good for three reasons:

  • It means instead of Smallville episodes being run on a haphazard basis with fans scrambling to know when a new episode is airing and ratings being crushed in the winter as a result, the show can come back and run strong all spring with one episode after another, perfect for rounding out a firm storyline arc.
  • If there is an actor’s strike, the writers have things at a point they can readily pick up from when it is over, unlike last season’s writer’s strike that had everyone scrambling.
  • The break means that the network can decide if they want more Smallville and if they do- the writers can adjust their back half of the season for this instead of having to randomly end things leaving no one satisfied if they don’t get their expected pick up. I personally am hoping this is the last season. Episode 9 will be a clip episode- and when series start running those it is a sign that they are on their last legs creatively and it is time for the show to end.

Season 8 Episode List- this has not changed since our last update.

801 Odyssey

802 Plastique

803 Toxic

804 Instinct

805 Committed

806 Prey

807 Identity

808 Bloodline

809 Abyss

810 UNTITLED

811 Legion

Casting Update:

Still no word on exactly which episode will mark the return of Kristin Kreuk as Lana for her final 5 episodes. Speculation is that episode 9 or 10 will mark that start.

The episode 809 Abyss has casting open for a young Clark and a young Chloe ( See SpoilerTV for this)

Ausiello Report:

Question: Any cool news regarding Lois on Smallville? — Paul
Ausiello: No, but I have some very interesting news about Chloe, who, as you probably heard, suffers some serious dementia in episode 9. Clark, in turn, seeks Jor-El’s help in restoring her memories — well almost all her memories. You see, Clark decides that his BFF might be better off forgetting a thing or two.

Matt Mitovich on TV Guide

Seriously, you’ve teased it enough. I must have the massive Smallville scoop that Erica Durance dropped on you. — Jeff
Matt: Actually, I have not teased it enough. [Pause] There. Now I have. Part 1 of the Q&A is coming Thursday, Lo fans, and remember, I am just the messenger.

How about some love for Smallville’s Chloe? Without anything to do with Lois or Jimmy? — Siobhan
Matt: Chloe… has new powers? That’s all I can dig up thus far. (I better hustle on that Allison Mack interview.) For what it’s worth, Erica talks about both Allison and Chloe, a few times. (Damn, I’m still teasing. Bad Matt!)

Are we going to see more of Smallville’s Oliver Queen with Lois? – Audrey
Matt: This is the point in Sprockets where I start parceling out sound bites from my in-depth Q&A with Erica Durance. Asked for a status report on Lo and the one also known as Green Arrow, she said, “Lois does have to confront her breakup with Oliver, and they do have a few storylines together, but from what I’ve seen they’re not getting back together in the near future.

Just because they’re flashback episodes dosen’t mean they’re on their last lim.

Yes it does- clip episodes are a lazy way to get through a period of time between stories. Flashbacks and clips are different things. Flashbacks can be effective methods of moving narrative forward- clip episodes are the writers way of giving everyone a week off. I cannot count how many clip episodes Stargate SG-1 resorted to in their last years but it is not something that shows that are fresh creatively do.
Flashbacks were used quite well last season to show Lex as a child – that was effective storytelling.
If we had had to see Lex reviewing his entire relationship with Clark that led to his deciding Clark was the Traveler in an entire episode- that would have been a filler episode with little narrative in terms of the story arcing. Instead the writers came up with some sharp dialog and Michael acted his rear off as usual and we had an exciting finale without a trip down memory lane.
I will stand by my statement- clip episodes are a lazy way to get out of writing an entire episode. Oh yes- and they also save a lot of money by recycling old footage.

I agree on some points, I like the split season except for the 13 week gap, I disagree on wanting this to be the last season. I feel that the new show runners and writers have shown promise from the spoilers we have been given, and I feel that one more season of team Lois and Clark could help make up for the 7 years we had to endure. If this has to be the last season than I hope that it can be ended on a positive with all loose ends tied up and a movie deal for the main cast members (Tom, Erica, Mike, etc.) if this was to happen then I for one would be willing to let the TV show go as long as I had a movie to look forward to.

    Larry-
My issue about any further seasons is – make sure they are fresh and have something new to say. 1 or 2 more seasons just to keep things going doesn’t do anyone any good. I personally enjoyed the last two seasons of the X-Files but they are considered by most fans to be played out . If Smallville is not careful the same could happen to them. Everything will hinge on the first half of the season and how it is backed up by the second half of the season. If we see things go the way season 6 did with the first half being awesome and then the back half as an excuse just to prolong things like 6 was- the show will quickly wear out its welcome.

I agree, they have to keep up the momentum from the first half, they have to keep it fresh, and I think it is possible to do so. Whether or not that will happen time will tell.

    Well we made Newsrama!

I agree that the 2nd half of any season should be just as exciting as the 1st half. With Goughlar, when they found out they got renewed for another season, it was stall, stall, stall. Their usual modis operandi was resurrecting Clana. Ho freakin hum. Too many fans couldn’t take it and so they left. It was a morass of depression and angst wallowing. Clark Kent is a symbol of hope. His fans like that about him. Goughlar lost sight of that fact.

I’m hoping that PS3 have not learned that particular tactic from their ‘mentors’. Before the 13 week gap, the 10th episode should be a major cliff hanger. They should drive the fanbase into a frenzy so they will tune in for episode 11 which is being written by Geoff Johns and has the Legion of SuperHeroes.

As for another season, I don’t know yet. I want to see PS3′s vision of what Clark Kent should be. It sounds as if it is going to be mythos oriented — but I want to see the actual execution before I decide I want another season.

One of the things I am very curious and anxious to see is how they are going to handle Lana returning for 5 episodes. That will take place after the 13 week Reaper gap. I’m hoping PS3 places Lana back into the position she has in the comics, nothing more and nothing less.

And I definitely want to see Lois Lane rise in importance in Clark’s life — not just as a love interest but as a friend and partner. Having Lois appear earlier in the story should produce some very interesting and highly entertaining storylines. We’ll see if PS3 has that in store for us this season.

Will the CW survive for another season? Big question there. They certainly haven’t been promoting their highest rated scripted show the last two seasons. How can any show, no matter how popular, survive that?
