Superman the Archtype for all Superhero Costumes

Here is a nifty video clip with actual footage of the Superheroes in Fantasy and Fashion exhibit currently on display in New York City at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
Apparently the Superman costume is seen as the model for all superhero costumes.
