Episode 713 Hero
The next episode Hero is an opportunity to catch up with old friends and old themes as Pete Ross comes to town. He becomes the freak of the week after getting hooked on some kryptonite laced Stride gum. The episode is one long promotion for the chewing gum- the product placement is downright obnoxious in nature. We see Sprint phones every chance the show gets so what are one or two more sponsors?

Funny thing? While reviewing for this write up I found that we even see the gum in the previous episodes: it is in Chloe’s desk with her phone in Siren and on a rack in the diner where Kara is working in Detroit in Fracture. And in Hero not only is Stride gum a major sponsor- our friends from Toyota seem to be back on board. Lana is driving a big new blue Toyota pickup truck.

I am glad to know the show has some corporate sponsors again- the special effects are already looking better now that there is more budget for them. How awful were the effects in the horrific beauty pageant episode Fierce? I am glad they have upped the budget again and the show is looking more like a real night time action show and not a morning kids live action show from my youth in the 20th century.

Speaking of recycling…..we all noticed that the hot club/gum factory was the same building front used as the club Clark hung out in while he was in Metropolis in season 3 in Exile.

Back to the story- Lionel is having a very uncomfortable cup of coffee with Lana while Clark comes downstairs. They are talking about Kara and Lex and how dangerous Lex getting close to her is. Pete walks in on this scene and is shocked- he lets Clark know he never has trusted the Luthors and never will.

As events unfold we find out Pete is right. Lex blackmails Pete into helping him steal Kara’s bracelet from Lionel’s safe in order to keep Chloe safe. Chloe and Lex are having a match of wills because he has put her work computer under lock and key so that her hacking is curtailed after the business in Siren when she made a mess of Lex’s plans with Black Canary.

Jimmy has been trying to help Kara jog her memory by hanging out with her but it hasn’t worked. Kara turns to Lex for help as everyone else around her is not helping her with anything real.

In the continuity column, Kara walks in as Lex is examining the toy soldiers we saw him playing with in his memories from Fracture. Lex gives Kara some pictures and tells her about the caves and the symbols in them and how he thinks they relate to Clark and Kara.

713 Lana Kara

Kara goes back to the farm to try to find some answers and shows them to Lana. These include the symbol that was the one Lana had in her disappearing tattoo. Lana stonewalls her , frustrating Kara and sending her back to Lex.

By the end of the episode Clark has retrieved the bracelet from Lionel’s office and hid it away for Kara. Pete is back to normal and leaving town. Chloe and Jimmy acknowledge they may be more than friends. Clark has questions about Lionel and his real intentions and Kara asks Lex if she can stay with him because she doesn’t feel at home at the farm.

I really liked the scenes with Clark and Pete- for the first time in a very long time I heard Jonathan Kent in Clark’s words and tone. The judgmental tone that Lana dislikes, the moralistic pain in the ass that Clark Kent can be is the boy scout in him who prefers a life of anonymity to one in the spotlight, who shuns selfishness but will do anything to help those he cares about. A few more baby steps toward destiny are made.
